New Garlic Crop available for sale 1 November 2019

It's been busy at the farm harvesting this year's garlic crop.  We harvested half the paddock by hand, the other half by trialing a new machine.  The crop is looking good and will be available for sale through our website.

HEALTHY GARLIC OIL

Healthy Garlic Oil - from the book "Omega 3 Cuisine" by Alan Roettinger with Udo Erasmus

Several companies now produce oils infused with various flavours, such as basil or garlic. Commercially, where the health benefits are not considered paramount (if at all), infusion is accomplished by heating the oil with various aromatics. In order to protect the fragile qualities of Udo’s Oil, the same results will be obtained without heating, in some cases by increasing the quantity of the flavouring agents. The procedure is quite simple, as you will see.

If you like garlic, this will immediately become a staple in your kitchen. It’s the quickest and easiest oil infusion, requiring no straining, decanting, or any other monkeying around. Properly steamed vegetables really need nothing else. Merely drizzle some of this oil on them and you will have a dish that anyone will eat with pleasure. It’ll turn pedestrian mashed potatoes into something truly special. Keep some of this on hand in your refrigerator and you’ll discover countless uses for it. It’s a standard ingredient in many of the recipes in this book.

Makes about 1 cup
4 to 7 cloves garlic (see note)
1 cup Udo’s Choice 3 6 9
Oil Blend

Pass the garlic cloves through a garlic press into a small jar. Add the oil and stir. Pour into a clean glass jar or bottle. Simple Garlic Udo’s Oil will keep for about 1 week in the refrigerator or 1 month in the freezer.

OUR 2019 GARLIC CROP IS IN THE GROUND

This week we planted out our 2019 garlic crop.  Because of the extremely dry weather conditions over the past months, we did not have enough mulch to cover all the beds. This year for the first time we have used weed mat on a couple of rows.  The remaining rows are heavily mulched.  This crop should be ready for harvest in November 2019.

New Season Garlic 2018 Available Soon

We have started to harvest this year's Certified Organic Italian Pink garlic crop and should have it available for sale in a couple of weeks.  It is hanging out to dry at the moment to remove excess moisture and form its dry outer protective skin.  If the garlic is kept dry and reasonably well ventilated, this once a year crop will keep for many months.  It is, however, at its very best just after harvest.   Visit this link to be notified when stock is available.

CITRONS

It's citrus time at our farm - these beauties are citrons from the orchard. Citrons are one of the four original citrus fruits from which all other citrus types developed.

The citron is a large fragrant citrus fruit with a thick rind.  It is one of the four original citrus fruits (the others being pomelo, mandarin and papeda) from which all other citrus types developed through natural hybrid selection or artificial hybridization.

While the lemon or orange are peeled to consume their pulpy and juicy segments, the citron's pulp is dry, containing a small quantity of juice, if any. The main content of a citron fruit is the thick white rind which is delicious to eat raw and is used in many ways around the world, such as in sweets, jams, pickles, preserves.

There is an increasing market for the citron for the soluble fibre (pectin).

GOLD FOR OUR GARLIC!

Some great news: Barrington River Organic Farm is proud to announce that we have won GOLD at the prestigious Royal Melbourne Fine Food Awards in the category of “Organic Hard Neck Garlic (Fresh Produce)”.

From our Press Release: "This award is a testament to the hard work, focus and determination of biodynamic farmer, Jan Goroncy and his team at Barrington River Organic Farm. “I am completely chuffed to win this award, because it validates my instincts as a “foodie” as well as my skills as a farmer. It was my good fortune to have encountered this beautiful organic Hard Neck garlic at a market stall some years ago – I fell in love with it immediately, and managed to obtain some seed stock to grow it. There was no specific training available for growing this variety, so I had to draw on my experience in biodynamics, my intuition, my endless research, and my passion for farming the best quality food, to achieve this fantastic outcome,” he said.

The Royal Melbourne Fine Food Awards - Australia’s premium fine food event. The Fine Food Awards attracts submissions from producers all around Australia. There are five Garlic categories, attracting more than 40 entries with nine competitors in the running for the Organic Hard Neck category alone,
